New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3)

Course Overview

This qualification assists participants to be more productive in the use of basic welding techniques in industry. The knowledge and skills covered in this qualification include welding safety; measurement; use of hand and power tools; sketching and reading drawings; welding theory for steel, and weld quality assurance. The qualification supports a pathway into New Zealand Certificate in Specialised Welding Level 4.

  • Applicants must have the numeracy and literacy abilities to read, write, comprehend text and make simple calculations

New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 4)

Course Overview

Developed to provide specialist training to participants wanting to build their engineering fabrication, steel construction, mechanical engineering and related industries skills. Graduates will be able to operate independently within their chosen disciplines and follow the written procedures utilised by their employer. This qualification builds on the New Zealand Certificate in Welding (Level 3) and leads to the New Zealand Certificate in Engineering Fabrication (Trade) (Level 4) with strands in Heavy Fabrication, Light Fabrication, and Steel Construction.

What You Learn

  • Complete welding projects using – MMAW, GMAW, FCAW and GTAW

  • Identify purpose and application of welding regulations in the NZ fabrication industry

  • Complete work plans independently and collaboratively

  • Present welds to industry standards for certification

  • Critique and define essential criteria of specialised weld testing

  • Communicate quality assurance measures and corrective actions

  • Work within a team to improve quality and consistency of welds

  • Create a work portfolio of specialised welds using a range of welding processes

  • Composition and Characteristics of engineering metals

  • Workplace documentation – Policies, procedures, compliance requirements

  • Equivalent qualification or skills (trade test to be completed to assess equivalent industry skills)
